Michael Obst: Songbook I (World Premiere) | Weimar University Orchestra & Choir
0:39 I. Hoffnung 4:32 II. Im Hafen 6:49 III. Im roten Salon 12:20 IV. Unter dem Mond 15:22 V. Testament 19:38 VI. Jänner Chamber Choir and Orchestra of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar Conductor: Nicolás Pasquet Songbook is not a typical choral work with orchestra. The voices are embedded in the orchestral sound for long passages, and in many places there is a tonal fusion of the voices with the instruments. Songbook is a two-part composition (Songbook I + Songbook II) with songs on texts by Hermann Schneider. Michael Obst is a composer, pianist, and teacher. He began his successful composing career with electronic music and subsequently composed works for music theater, film and concert halls. His experience as a pianist with the Ensemble Modern, enriched his understanding of contemporary music. After 25 fulfilling years of teaching (e.g. as composition professor at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar), he is now excited to once again concentrate on his own composition projects. https://www.michael-obst.com University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar: Website: https://www.hfm-weimar.de Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hfmweimar Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5DHklgcx2Fy0uWsrK6G3fw Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hfmweimar YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hfmfranzlisztweimar Concert recording on June 23, 2022 at the Weimarhalle in Weimar

Tschaikowsky: Symphony No. 6 B minor | Orchestra of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar
For the first time in music history, a symphony ends with a slow movement throughout and fades away into nothingness. The outer movements map out origin and return, while the inner movements reflect life – the life of P. I. Tchaikovsky? The introduction opens, like a melancholy life review, with a first theme full of sighing metaphors, driven by restlessness, until it culminates in a yearning song as the second theme: fate, love – and death, because both themes are intertwined with the Russian Orthodox liturgy for the deceased in the development section. Inevitability establishes itself as the motto of the first movement, of the entire symphony. With its sobbing fabric of sound, the final movement, Adagio lamentoso, embraces its spiritual twin, the opening movement. Muted horns usher in the inevitable, a tam-tam stroke and a trombone chorale seal the return to the Office of the Dead. The work fades away, pppp. The University Orchestra is one of the most excellent orchestras in its category in Germany. In its tradition as the first orchestral school in Germany, the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar has always paid special attention to its most important youth ensemble. For students of orchestral instruments, these practical music experiences are an integral and indispensable part of their studies and at the same time serve as preparation for their future professional life. 00:00 - Start 00:30 - I. Beethoven: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 4 in G major op. 58
Ludwig van Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto in G major was composed between 1805 and 1806. The autograph is lost; however, there is a draft authorised by Beethoven for printing in 1808. Beethoven later produced a version for string quintet and piano. The piano concerto was already performed from 1807 with Beethoven as pianist. Pianist Lovre Marušić celebrated a great success in December 2023: The student of Prof Grigory Gruzman's piano class in Weimar won 2nd prize worth 25,000 euros at the 10th International Beethoven Competition in Bonn. Most recently, he attracted attention in 2021 with a 2nd prize at the prestigious Cleveland International Piano Competition in the USA. With this concert, Lovre Marušić successfully completed his concert exam at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar. With this concert, Nicolás Pasquet bid farewell as chief conductor of ‘his’ university orchestra - and as Professor of Orchestral Conducting also to his music academy. For more than 30 years, he had a decisive influence on conducting training in Weimar. Together with the other lecturers at the Institute of Conducting and Opera Coaching, he has trained generations of successful conductors, general music directors, chief conductors and opera coaches. His alumni stand at the podiums of major orchestras throughout Europe, the USA and Canada - in Madrid, Amsterdam, Salzburg, Boston, Montréal, Copenhagen, Budapest, Cologne, Düsseldorf and many more. Ravel: Suite Nr. 2 from Daphnis et Chloé | University Orchestra & Chamber choir
Maurice Ravel: Suite Nr. 2 from Daphnis et Chloé The Second Suite, published in 1913, is the most popular excerpt from the ballet music for Daphnis et Chloé, which Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev commissioned from composer Maurice Ravel in 1909. The ballet tells the story of the budding love between two children under the warm Greek sun. Ravel worked on this extraordinary work almost every night, and it was worth it, at least artistically, as it is still being performed around 100 years later. Daphnis and Chloé are two foundlings who are taken in by a shepherd family and fall in love as they grow up. They are accompanied by creatures from Greek mythology, such as nymphs and gods. The setting is the Greek island of Lesbos, which Ravel attempts to portray as a large musical fresco, an idealised reality created from his imagination. Ravel describes his work as a symphonie chorégraphique, consisting of a few motifs that follow a strict plan, developing and varying throughout the suite. With this concert, Nicolás Pasquet bid farewell as chief conductor of ‘his’ university orchestra - and as Professor of Orchestral Conducting also to his music academy. For more than 30 years, he had a decisive influence on conducting training in Weimar.
